Cleaning and replacing fuel injectors

Duration: 2-4 hoursCategory: Engine

  • Fuel injector diagnostics
  • Fuel injector replacement
  • Injector coding and programming
  • Fuel system performance check

Faulty fuel injectors often cause engine misfires and unstable engine operation. We begin with computer diagnostics and analyze engine fault codes. Common codes include P0300-P0306, which indicate misfires, where the last digit corresponds to the specific cylinder. After diagnostics we evaluate injector operation and fuel spray pattern. In the U.S., injectors are rarely tested on specialized benches and are often replaced directly, but accurate diagnosis is still important. There are several types of injectors including standard gasoline injectors, GDI (direct injection) injectors, and high-pressure injectors used in Common Rail systems. Some injectors can be cleaned using an ultrasonic bath, but in many cases the cleaning service can cost more than installing new injectors. Direct-injection and high-pressure injectors are especially sensitive to fuel quality, which is why replacement is often required when their performance is compromised. On some vehicles, newly installed injectors must also be registered or coded into the engine control unit. Access to injectors and the complexity of replacement can vary significantly depending on the engine design. On some engines the job is relatively straightforward, while on others additional components such as the intake system may need to be removed, so the final labor cost may vary depending on the vehicle.
