Diagnosis of short circuits in circuits

Duration: 1 hourCategory: Electrical

  • Short circuit diagnostics
  • Wiring and connector inspection
  • Fuse and relay testing
  • Electrical circuit troubleshooting

Electrical shorts and circuit faults often appear as repeatedly blown fuses, random warning lights on the dashboard, or systems that stop working intermittently. The cause can be damaged wiring, corroded connectors, moisture inside electrical components, or improperly installed aftermarket equipment. Electrical diagnostics is often one of the most challenging types of automotive repair because it is difficult to estimate the exact cost in advance. Locating a short circuit may take several hours or sometimes even days since different sections of the electrical system must be tested step by step. In real situations these issues sometimes appear in unexpected places. For example, on certain Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW vehicles parts of the CAN communication network run through the headlight assemblies, and when moisture enters the headlight housing it can trigger multiple fault codes, steering assist warnings, and other electrical problems. On some Volvo models electrical circuits pass through components near the rear view mirror area, and after windshield replacement connectors may be disturbed, leading to poor contact and irregular system operation including fuel pump control. Because of extensive experience with automotive electrical systems, our technicians focus on identifying these problems as efficiently as possible.
