Unusual engine noises can have many different causes, and many of them can sound very similar. The noise may present as ticking, knocking, rattling, or vibration coming either from external components or from inside the engine. Over decades of working with engines, our technicians have diagnosed a wide range of engine noises. This experience often allows us to identify likely causes simply by listening to how the engine sounds and understanding where to begin the diagnostic process. There are situations where customers visit multiple repair shops without finding the true source of the noise. For example, one customer visited several shops in Brooklyn where technicians were unable to identify the cause of a persistent rattling noise in the engine. During our inspection we determined that the noise was coming from the high-pressure fuel pump, which is driven by a camshaft lobe. Because of the engine layout, the sound was transmitted through the engine and made the source difficult to locate. Once the exact cause was identified, the issue was resolved and the customer later left a positive review on Google Maps.
