In the United States installing an additional engine skid plate is not very common. In theory this type of protection would normally be offered by dealerships, but in reality most dealerships do not provide this service and generally do not consider it necessary. Many vehicles do come with what is called a factory engine cover, but in most cases this is only a lightweight plastic or fabric aerodynamic panel. Its main purpose is to improve airflow under the vehicle and provide minor protection from dirt and debris. It is not designed to protect the engine oil pan from impact. For vehicles used only in the city, such as in New York, the risk of damage is usually low. However when traveling outside the city - for example to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, mountain areas, or rougher roads - the risk of hitting something underneath the vehicle increases. Rocks, ice, road debris, or uneven surfaces can damage the engine oil pan or other components. Installing an aluminum skid plate helps protect these components from impact. These plates are designed specifically for each vehicle model, mount to factory attachment points, and usually include service openings for oil changes and filter access. In simple terms it works much like a screen protector for your phone - installed once and it protects important components from unexpected damage for a long time.
