One of the most common reasons vehicles fail the New York State inspection is a Check Engine light related to the EVAP system. The EVAP system is designed to capture fuel vapors and prevent them from escaping into the atmosphere. Fuel vapors from the gas tank are stored in a charcoal canister and later routed through a system of valves and sensors back into the engine intake, where they are burned during normal engine operation. If the system detects a leak or malfunction, the Check Engine light turns on and the vehicle will not pass the emissions portion of the inspection. The cause can vary widely, including a loose or damaged gas cap seal, cracked EVAP hoses, a faulty purge valve, pressure sensors, leaks in the vapor lines, or problems with the charcoal canister. On some vehicles, such as Ford models, the EVAP system includes multiple valves, sensors, and vapor lines located underneath the vehicle, making diagnostics more complex. At our shop we perform EVAP diagnostics using professional scan tools and smoke testing equipment, which allows us to quickly identify leaks or system faults. If a vehicle arrives with this type of error before inspection, we inform the customer in advance that the car will not pass inspection until the issue is repaired. EVAP diagnostics and repairs are considered additional services and are not included in the cost of the inspection itself. However, thanks to our experience, we are often able to locate the problem quickly and help customers avoid unnecessary expenses. Once the issue is repaired and the system is verified, the vehicle can successfully pass the NY State inspection.
