In a large city like New York, especially during the summer, driving without air conditioning quickly becomes extremely uncomfortable. In some repair shops, instead of using the correct refrigerant specified by the manufacturer, technicians may install a cheaper alternative. For example, a vehicle designed for R1234yf refrigerant may be filled with R134a using special adapters in order to reduce cost. These two refrigerants are not compatible, and this practice can damage the compressor and the entire A/C system. This usually happens because R1234yf refrigerant is significantly more expensive and the equipment required to service it is also costly.
