Cylinder head gasket replacement
Cylinder head surface inspection
Valve and guide inspection
Root cause diagnostics for failure
Replacing a cylinder head gasket is one of the most complex and labor-intensive engine repairs. Before performing the repair it is important to determine the root cause of the failure, which is often related to engine overheating or other mechanical issues. This procedure requires disassembling a significant portion of the engine, including timing components, intake and exhaust manifolds, engine accessories, and the cylinder head itself. On higher-mileage engines additional complications are common, such as broken exhaust manifold studs, seized bolts, or worn components that must be addressed during the repair. Once the cylinder head is removed, the surface must be carefully inspected and often machined to ensure it is perfectly flat. The valves and related components are also inspected, carbon deposits may be cleaned, and valve stem seals are sometimes replaced if necessary. Although it may sound like a simple gasket replacement, the process involves extensive engine disassembly and precise work, especially on V6 or V8 engines that use multiple cylinder heads.
