Hybrid batteries generate heat during normal operation because they constantly charge and discharge while the vehicle is driving. A similar effect can be noticed when a phone heats up while charging, but in a hybrid vehicle the battery operates at approximately 200-300 volts, which produces significantly more heat. For this reason hybrid vehicles use a dedicated battery cooling system with fans and air intake ducts that move air through the battery pack to regulate temperature. Over time dust, debris, and dirt can accumulate inside these ducts and around the cooling fan, restricting airflow and increasing the risk of battery overheating. At our shop we service the hybrid battery cooling system by cleaning the cooling fan, intake ducts, and airflow channels, while also inspecting the system for proper operation. This maintenance works like preventive service, similar to replacing a filter periodically, and helps maintain proper airflow so the hybrid battery stays cooler and lasts longer.
