Steering rack replacement
Steering system play diagnostics
Tie rod and steering component inspection
The steering rack is one of the main mechanical components of the vehicle's steering system. Over time internal wear can develop inside the rack mechanism, including gear wear, internal play, or power steering fluid leaks on vehicles equipped with hydraulic systems. Common symptoms of a failing steering rack include knocking noises while turning the steering wheel, excessive steering play, uneven steering effort, or visible fluid leaks. In some cases the steering rack can be repaired or rebuilt, but when the wear is significant the entire unit may need to be replaced. Accessibility of the steering rack varies significantly between vehicles: on some cars it can be removed relatively easily, while on others partial removal of the subframe or suspension components may be required. Mechanics perform a full steering system inspection including tie rods, mounting points, and related steering components before determining whether repair or replacement of the steering rack is necessary.
