Replacement of exhaust gaskets and seals

The vehicle exhaust system is made up of several sections connected by flanges and high-temperature gaskets. In many cases these connections use graphite exhaust gaskets designed to seal the joints between exhaust components. Because the engine and exhaust system constantly move slightly due to engine vibration and vehicle operation, these joints experience continuous stress. Over time heat, vibration, and age can cause graphite gaskets to deteriorate, burn out, or lose their sealing ability. When this happens an exhaust leak may develop, often producing unusual exhaust noise or exhaust smell. Many drivers assume the muffler or exhaust pipes are rusted or damaged and require major replacement. However, after proper inspection the issue is often simply a worn gasket at one of the exhaust joints.
