Engine oil leak diagnostics
The front and rear crankshaft seals are designed to keep engine oil inside the engine and prevent leaks around the crankshaft. Over time heat, pressure, and normal wear can cause rubber or PTFE seals to lose flexibility and begin leaking oil. Replacing the front crankshaft seal is usually more straightforward because it is located at the front of the engine near the belt or timing system. Replacing the rear crankshaft seal is significantly more complex because in most cases the transmission must be removed and separated from the engine, and the flywheel or flexplate must also be removed. On higher mileage vehicles removing the flywheel bolts can sometimes present additional challenges. Proper installation is critical and requires the use of special seal drivers or installation tools to ensure the seal is seated correctly. Many modern rear crankshaft seals are made of PTFE and must be installed dry without any oil or lubricant on the sealing surface. Incorrect installation can quickly lead to another oil leak. At FIX SERVICE these repairs are performed using proper procedures and professional tools. Because the labor involved can vary greatly depending on the vehicle design and accessibility, the exact price is always determined individually for each vehicle.
