A brake caliper is the component that presses the brake pads against the brake rotor during braking. Inside the caliper there is a piston that pushes the brake pad when hydraulic pressure from the brake fluid is applied. The caliper itself moves on guide pins, commonly called caliper slides, which must move freely and be properly lubricated. Over time these slides can seize, lubrication can dry out, and the piston may begin to stick. This can cause uneven brake pad wear, overheating of the wheel, or the vehicle pulling to one side during braking. In some cases the caliper can be serviced by cleaning and lubricating the slides. However if the piston or the caliper housing is damaged or seized, the caliper must be replaced. After installing a new caliper the brake system is properly bled and tested to ensure safe braking performance.
