Seat belts can sometimes develop mechanical problems over time. The belt may not retract properly, may get stuck, or may not return smoothly into the retractor. In other cases the seat belt buckle may malfunction, causing a warning on the dashboard indicating that the seat belt is not fastened even when it is. Seat belts are directly connected to the vehicle's passive safety system. During a collision the vehicle's control module must detect whether the seat belt is fastened in order for the airbags and other safety systems to operate correctly. Because of this, proper operation of the seat belt mechanism and buckle is very important. Over time seat belts can also collect dust and dirt, which may affect the smooth operation of the retractor mechanism. In theory seat belts can be periodically cleaned by extending the belt and carefully washing the fabric. However in practice most drivers in New York never service their seat belts and only address the issue once the belt begins to malfunction. At FIX SERVICE, we perform diagnostics, repair, or replacement of seat belt components depending on the condition of the system.
