The EVAP system is designed to capture and store fuel vapors in a sealed system to prevent them from escaping into the atmosphere. Even a very small leak in this system can trigger a Check Engine light and cause EVAP-related fault codes. Because the system works with fuel vapors, a visual inspection alone often cannot locate the problem. A smoke test is the most effective diagnostic method - low pressure smoke is introduced into the EVAP system, allowing technicians to detect even the smallest leaks. EVAP faults can prevent a vehicle from passing the official New York State inspection. At FIX SERVICE we use professional smoke testing equipment to accurately locate leaks in the EVAP system. These issues can be complex and sometimes require detailed step-by-step diagnostics because leaks may occur in hoses, valves, the charcoal canister, or other system components.
