Testing the effectiveness of the catalyst

Duration: 1-2 hoursCategory: Emissions / Exhaust Gases

  • Catalytic converter efficiency diagnostics
  • Oxygen sensor inspection
  • Engine parameter analysis
  • Exhaust system condition check

Catalytic converter efficiency is usually checked through engine diagnostics and analysis of oxygen sensor data. We compare the readings from the upstream and downstream O2 sensors to determine whether the catalytic converter is functioning properly and effectively treating the exhaust gases. In some cases a visual inspection through the oxygen sensor port or partial removal of exhaust components may also be required. Sometimes the internal ceramic substrate of the catalytic converter can break apart or even be missing completely. Broken ceramic fragments may travel through the exhaust system and occasionally clog parts of the muffler. In rare situations ceramic dust can move back toward the engine and cause serious cylinder damage. For this reason it is important to maintain proper engine operation, use good quality fuel, ensure sensors are functioning correctly, and perform timely exhaust system diagnostics.
